Well, believe it or not, we are already HALFWAY through the school year! As we begin the third marking period, it is very important to reiterate the importance of turning one's work in on time, every time. Turning work in on time is the biggest predictor of student success for two reasons: (1) student work, although 30% of the weighted grade, makes up the bulk of what we do on a daily basis, and (2) even more importantly, all assignments are designed to prepare students for their end-of-unit assessments, which make up 70% of one's grade. Thus, if the work is not done, this can be thought of as a "double whammy," resulting in a low assignment grade and a low assessment grade.
Because of this, I have decided that I will only be accepting late work for a unit until the day we take the test for that unit. Work done after this point does nothing to help a student prepare for the assessment of what they learned, and they are then doing work that is so old that they often forget the point and procedure. It is important that we instill a good work ethic in our students, and utilizing a more stringent late work policy--one that is more reflective of the "real world" as well--will help to make that a reality.
Have a wonderful weekend and let's make the second half of the year even better than the first!
